What is a pump motor, and what applications use it?

A pump motor is an electric motor that drives a pump. In commercial and industrial systems, the pump may move water or other fluids for water, wastewater, irrigation, cooling, process, booster, centrifugal or fire-pump applications. The motor is sold separately from a complete pump assembly unless the product description says otherwise, and its mounting, shaft arrangement, speed, horsepower, voltage and other requirements must fit the pump.

What are the different types of pump motors?

Common types include close-coupled JM and JP, West Coast fit, vertical hollow-shaft, vertical solid-shaft, fire-pump, washdown and hazardous-location motors. JM, JP and West Coast fit motors are used with horizontal pump configurations, while vertical hollow-shaft and solid-shaft motors serve vertical pumping systems with different shaft arrangements and thrust requirements. ODP and TEFC describe enclosure types, not shaft arrangements.

What is the difference between JM and JP pump motors?

Both are close-coupled pump-motor configurations, but their shaft extensions differ. JM uses a shorter shaft extension, while JP uses a longer extension for certain pump designs and hot-fluid applications. They are not interchangeable without confirming the pump dimensions.

Are pumps considered constant-torque or variable-torque?

Pumps can be either variable-torque or constant-torque, depending on their design. Centrifugal pumps (by far the most common) are typically variable-torque loads, because the torque required drops as speed is reduced. Positive-displacement pumps, such as gear, piston, or progressive-cavity pumps, are generally constant-torque loads, because they require relatively consistent torque throughout their speed range.
