General Purpose Motors for Industrial Applications

General Purpose Electric Motors for Pumps, Fans, Conveyors, & More

General purpose motors are standard electric motors used in common industrial and commercial equipment. They are available in single-phase and three-phase designs, with Open Drip Proof (ODP), Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) and Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated (TENV) enclosures, along with different construction, mounting and efficiency options. General purpose motors can also include features that are considered severe duty, so the category does not represent one universal motor construction. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a general purpose motor, and what applications use it?

General purpose motors are standard AC motors designed for everyday industrial and commercial use in environments that don't require special protection from moisture, dust, corrosion, or hazardous conditions. Because of this versatility, they're used across a wide range of equipment, including pumps, fans, blowers, compressors, conveyors, mixers, HVAC equipment, machine tools, and material-handling equipment. They're common in agricultural equipment, packaging machinery, and general manufacturing processes.

How is a general purpose motor different from a severe-duty motor?

The categories can overlap. Some general purpose motors include severe-duty features such as cast-iron construction, TEFC enclosures, improved sealing, bearing protection, regreasable bearings, higher service factors, low-vibration construction or upgraded insulation. For motors designed specifically for harsher environments, see ESR’s Severe Duty Motors

What is the difference between ODP, TEFC and TENV motors?

The primary enclosure types are Open Drip Proof (ODP), Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) and Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated (TENV). ODP motors are intended for clean, dry and well-ventilated environments. TEFC motors provide more protection where dust, dirt or moisture may be present, but they are not automatically waterproof or explosion-proof. TENV motors do not use an external cooling fan and are useful in environments where materials tend to get caught in and clog the fan cover vents.

What information is needed to replace a general purpose motor?

Start with a clear picture of the existing motor nameplate. The nameplate can help confirm horsepower, voltage, phase, RPM, frame, enclosure, mounting, service factor and insulation requirements. Shaft dimensions and other mounting details should also be compared because a replacement may be an exact match, a dimensional replacement or an application substitute.
Send our team an email with that information atsales@esrmotors.com and we’ll get you quote for a replacement.

How long does a general purpose motor last?

There's no fixed service-life number that applies to every motor. Actual service life depends on factors like sizing, loading, alignment, lubrication, bearing condition, cooling, and enclosure selection. Proper maintenance and correct application help extend a motor's life, while poor conditions or misuse can shorten it. Accessories such as soft starters and VFDs can also help by reducing inrush current and mechanical stress on the motor during starts and speed changes.Contact ESR for help evaluating a motor's remaining life.
