EU Ecodesign Regulation: New Requirements for Electric Motors and Variable Speed Drives
This ABB fact sheet explains the updated EU Ecodesign Regulation (EU 2019/1781), which introduces stricter efficiency standards for electric motors and variable speed drives. The regulation replaces EC 640/2009 and will be implemented in two phases—July 1, 2021, and July 1, 2023—impacting a wide range of motor types and drive systems.
Key Points
- Two-Phase Implementation: The regulation introduces new efficiency standards in two stages—first in 2021 and expanded requirements in 2023
- Higher Efficiency Levels: IE3 is now the minimum for most 3-phase motors; IE4 becomes mandatory for 75–200 kW motors starting July 2023
- Inclusion of Ex eb and 1-Phase Motors: Step 2 extends coverage to explosion-protected Ex eb motors and single-phase motors that must meet IE2
- ABB Compliance: ABB already provides compliant solutions (e.g., ACS880, ACS580, ACH580 series) meeting or exceeding 2023 requirements
- Expanded Scope: Covers 3-phase motors, variable speed drives (VSDs), and explosion-protected, brake, and TEAO motors
- End of IE2 + VSD Option: The previous IE2 with variable speed drive compliance path is discontinued
- Drives Compliance: Standard LV AC drives (0.12–1000 kW) must meet IE2 efficiency; regenerative, low-harmonic, and multi-output drives are excluded
- Reference Regulation: Implements Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781, repealing EC 640/2009
